My practice relies on the transformative potential of sound by selecting and modifying it to create meaningful experiences. Building on my music background, I have evolved into a broader engagement with sound, often drawing from my South American roots and incorporating sardonicism that navigates the absurd.
Currently, I explore various mediums in sonic arts, including sound sculptures, performances with non-traditional instruments, and graphic scores. By combining sound with visual and kinetic elements, I challenge the listening situation, providing a more complex sensory experience that leads to an intricate set of codes and significations. These works address themes such as translation, communication misunderstandings, labor, and living in different contexts. They are deeply connected to the physical and social spaces I inhabit, revealing latent political and cultural content.
These pieces have been presented in Peru, Spain, France, Germany, Italy, the Czech Republic, and the United States. I am currently pursuing an MFA in Sound at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, supported by the New Artist Society Scholarship and the Chilecrea Scholarship from the Chilean Ministry of Cultures, Arts, and Heritage.

Mi práctica se basa en el potencial transformador del sonido, seleccionándolo y modificándolo para crear experiencias significativas. A partir de mi formación musical, he evolucionado hacia un compromiso más amplio con el sonido, a menudo recurriendo a mis raíces sudamericanas e incorporando un sardonicismo que navega lo absurdo.
Actualmente, exploro diversos medios dentro de las artes sonoras, incluyendo esculturas sonoras, performances con instrumentos no tradicionales y partituras gráficas. Al combinar el sonido con elementos visuales y cinéticos, desafío la situación de escucha, ofreciendo una experiencia sensorial más compleja que da lugar a un intrincado conjunto de códigos y significados. Estas obras abordan temas como la traducción, los malentendidos en la comunicación, el trabajo y el vivir en diferentes contextos. Están profundamente conectadas con los espacios físicos y sociales que habito, revelando contenidos políticos y culturales latentes.
Estas piezas han sido presentadas en Perú, España, Francia, Alemania, Italia, la República Checa y Estados Unidos. Actualmente, estoy cursando un MFA en Sound en el School of the Art Institute of Chicago, con el apoyo de la beca New Artist Society y la beca Chilecrea del Ministerio de las Culturas, las Artes y el Patrimonio de Chile.

Mauricio López F. (b. 1989) is an artist born in Santiago de Chile. His relationship with music began at the age of 11, and he quickly became active in the Chilean underground scene. He studied Musical Composition at the Escuela Moderna de Música, where his works included pieces such as a string quartet, orchestral compositions, and a Latin big band piece. Later, he was selected by composer Luca Belcastro to participate in the Copiú: Improvement Course in Composition and Interpretation of Contemporary Music. Mauricio also pursued a Bachelor’s Degree in Aesthetics at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, focusing on avant-garde movements in the context of Chilean popular music.
Among his musical projects is El Primer Extranjero, which leans toward experimental pop, and Lerdo, an experimental punk band with which he has toured Europe and Latin America, and opened for the American band Faith No More.
In addition to his compositional work, he has developed sound design for video games, TV series, animations, documentaries, and exhibitions. Notable projects include the stop-motion series Zander and the multimedia implementation of the Ander exhibition at the National Museum of Fine Arts. Mauricio also worked as a curator at the innovative creative center Infante 1415 and as the director of the Ladrido record label.
In 2023, Mauricio received the New Artist Society Scholarship for the MFA in Sound program at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC). Here, his artistic practice relies on the transformative potential of sound, exploring various mediums in sonic arts, including sound sculptures, kinetics, performances with non-traditional instruments, and graphic scores. His works address themes such as translation, communication misunderstandings, labor, and living in different contexts, often viewed through a sardonic lens. Mauricio’s works have been presented in Perú, Spain, France, Germany, Italy, the Czech Republic, and the United States.

Mauricio López F. (n. 1989) es un artista nacido en Santiago de Chile. Su relación con la música comenzó a los 11 años, y rápidamente se involucró en la escena underground chilena. Estudió Composición Musical en la Escuela Moderna de Música, donde creó obras que incluyen un cuarteto de cuerdas, composiciones orquestales y repertorio para big band latina. Más tarde, fue seleccionado por el compositor Luca Belcastro para participar en Copiú: Curso de Perfeccionamiento en Composición e Interpretación de Música Contemporánea. Además, cursó un Bachillerato en Estética en la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, enfocándose en los movimientos de vanguardia en el contexto de la música popular chilena.
Entre sus proyectos musicales se encuentra El Primer Extranjero, con una inclinación hacia el pop experimental, y Lerdo, una banda de punk experimental con la que ha realizado giras por Europa y Latinoamérica, además de haber abierto el concierto de la banda estadounidense Faith No More.
Además de su trabajo compositivo, ha desarrollado diseño sonoro para videojuegos, series de televisión, animaciones, documentales y exposiciones. Entre sus proyectos destacados se encuentran la serie stop-motion Zander y la implementación multimedia de la exposición Ander en el Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes. También trabajó como curador en el innovador centro creativo Infante 1415 y como director del sello discográfico Ladrido.
